I often think about an episode of that great British comedy “Yes Minister”. Hacket (a UK MP) us surprised by his head of department’s negative attitude to the EU. The HoD explained that while the UK government was officially in favour of EU participation, the real strategy was to cause dissent by pitting nations off against each other and then when the time was right, leave EU and watch it all fall apart. Many of the story lines had real issues of the day, and some have to pass over time.
