Largely boils down to set goals and read everything you can – who would have thought that….. Although interestingly, Richard Feynman who is one of my academic hero’s was reticent to read existing research in any field he was investigating preferring instead to start from scratch.
If smart people tend to be night owls I wonder if that means morons (or retards if you prefer) usually go to bed early?
Choose your words wisely Master Tate because others adopt them and the ripple of disrespect grows.
I meant no disrespect follower Graeme-san. I’m just a bored smart arse.
Journey on pathways that enrich you and enrich others
So then I will follow you.
My paraphrase of a quote I read once, ” If trading doesn’t make you humble, don’t worry life will.”
Merry Christmas and may 2014 bring good things your way Troy.
Regarding Feynman’s approach. In his book “Thinking fast and Slow”, Kahneman talks about ‘framing’ If you were to ask “how long is Sydney Harbor Bridge?” you would get a far more diverse group of answers than if you asked “How many metres longer or shorter than 150 metres is the SHB?” In the second example all the answers will center around 150 m – they were ‘framed’ by the question. Usually if the frame is widely wrong the answers from the first style of question will be more accurate.
In fact it has been shown that even seemingly unrelated things effect what we do. So if you show people a group of high numbers disguised a cricket scores or basketball scores then ask them to value (say) a cup they will give , on average, a higher valuation than if you show them a group of low numbers first.
So, Fenyman’s approach is extremely smart (as one might expect from him) – he doesn’t want to cloud his own thinking with external bias
Interesting. But does not specify where the IQ numbers came from. Most of the widely used IQ tests are validated against performance at school and therefore favour individuals who are “school bright”. The exemplars cited were all highly creative people and most IQ tests are weak predictors of creativity. But that is another subject.
There are those who can think and bring to life something new and amazing for the benefit of society, and then there are the rest of us who can make better progress by ‘not trying to re-invent the wheel’.
Fear, greed, jealousy,…………have tried to suppress human evolution but things are now moving so quickly the question could be asked, are we mentally and emotionally ready to take on the future?
